A blue screen in Windows appears without warning, with a stop code and a percentage that often never finishes. Windows stopped because something in the system or the hardware stopped responding correctly. On its own it does not mean the computer has burned out. It is a message, and the code says where the check should start.
If the blue screen flashes past and the computer boots again on its own, the picture is a different one: the computer restarts by itself. If the screen freezes and you have to hold the power button, see my computer freezes. This article stays with a screen that stays long enough to read, or that returns on every startup.
What to catch before it goes
If the screen stays up, photograph it before it disappears. The stop code is enough, in the Latin letters as they appear:
- MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. Often RAM, after a move, a knock, or a new module that is not seated properly.
- VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, or a code that names the graphics card. Often a driver or the graphics card itself, especially in a game.
- CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED and SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION. A core part of Windows or a driver stopped. It can be an update, a program or a failing drive.
- KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. Windows could not read something from the drive. A drive check comes before any format.
- WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. The hardware reported an error that software cannot correct. It needs measurement, not a cleaner program.
Next to the code, write down when it happened: at startup, in a game, after an update, or once and never again.
What to leave alone
Do not download “blue screen fixers” from an unknown page. Most of them never read the code. Some add another problem.
Do not format because the screen was frightening. A format wipes the system and, if the drive is already hard to read, makes protecting the files harder. A reinstall has its place when the code points to a damaged system and the drive is healthy. We separate that before we start: when a computer needs Windows installed.
If the drive is clicking, or the blue screen appears on every boot and you never reach the desktop, stop the repeated startups. Each boot is another read on a drive that may be getting worse.
The causes we see in the workshop
A driver after an update. Graphics card, network card, or a Windows update the day before. If the computer still boots, we say so before we open the case. If the blue screen continues after a clean driver install, the part remains.
RAM. The code MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, and blue screens at random moments with no game and no new program, lead to the memory first. A module that came loose after a clean or a move looks the same as failed memory. A test separates them.
The drive. When the blue screen comes with folders that lag, files that will not open, or a mechanical drive you can hear, the drive is checked before the system. A copy of whatever still opens, then a decision on repair or replacement.
A graphics card under load. A blue screen only in a game or in video editing, with the fans high, can be the card, a power supply that cannot hold it, or temperature. The three are measured together. A dust clean comes in when temperature is the cause, not as the first move for every code.
A virus or an unwanted program. Less common than a driver or memory. We consider it when, along with the blue screen, programs appeared on their own or the browser changed. Then the path is virus removal, after we see that the drive can still be read.
What you can do at home
- Photograph the stop code. One word, such as MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, saves time in diagnosis.
- Unplug USB devices you do not need: an external drive, a hub, an old printer. A failed device can drop Windows the moment it connects.
- If the computer came back after the blue screen, save your work and note what you were doing at the time.
- Do not open the power supply and do not move cables inside the case to “seat” the memory. A power supply holds voltage.
Until it is repaired
If the computer is for work and you need one the same day, laptop rental covers the gap. Diagnosis at the shop, Yoseef Eliya 18B, is free, and the price is given before any work starts. The general guide is PC repair in Ioannina.
Frequently asked questions
Does a blue screen mean the computer has failed?
Not on its own. It means Windows stopped on an error. The code can point to a driver, memory, the drive or a graphics card. Diagnosis says which one it is, before any part is replaced.
Is one time enough to worry?
Once, after an update, and with no repeat, is noted and watched. A repeat the same day, a blue screen on every boot, or a code that names the drive or the memory, needs a check before you go back to normal work.
Will a format stop it?
Only when the cause is the system or a bad driver and the drive is healthy. Memory, the drive and a graphics card keep producing a blue screen after a reinstall.
Are the files lost?
A blue screen on its own does not wipe the drive. What was open and unsaved is lost. Files are at risk if the drive can no longer be read, or if a format happens before the check.
Is a laptop the same as a desktop?
The code is read the same way. On a laptop, temperature and the battery are added when the screen appears only off the mains or with the chassis hot. On a desktop, the power supply and the graphics card are added when it appears only in a game.
How long does the check take?
The first check is done in the shop, with the code you bring. If it needs a memory, drive or graphics-card test, we tell you the time and the cost before you approve the work.
