You hit format without meaning to. The Recycle Bin is empty. The USB looks blank. Photos, invoices or a project have vanished. The first feeling is that they are gone for good. In most cases they are not — as long as you stop using the device and do not write new data over the old.
At ZarrasTech in Ioannina we handle file recovery after an accidental format, a deletion, a drive that asks to be formatted, or a computer that will not boot. Diagnosis is free. No work starts without a cost update and your approval.
A format does not always erase the files
A quick format in Windows usually does not wipe the contents of the drive. It removes the folder structure — the "map" that says where each file lives. The data stays on the disk until new files are written in its place.
That is why what you did after the format matters. If you reinstalled Windows on the same drive, downloaded programs, synced cloud storage or kept using the computer normally, the space fills up and the odds drop. If you stopped immediately, the chances are often good — especially on a mechanical hard drive or a USB stick.
A full format and some SSDs with TRIM are a different story: recovery is harder, and there are no promises without a check. For the first safe steps in general, see also recovering files before they are lost for good.
Cases we see all the time
They are not all the same, but the scenarios repeat:
- Accidental format in Windows. A reinstall, "Reset this PC", or the wrong disk in the installer. Personal files may still be on the same drive.
- A USB, external drive or SD card that shows as empty or asks to be formatted. Often the file system is damaged, not empty. Do not click format.
- A deleted folder or an emptied Recycle Bin. If the computer was not used much afterwards, recovery is usually the simplest case.
- A laptop or PC that will not boot, with a drive that clicks or is not recognised. Here the files come first, not a format. See a real laptop recovery example.
- A phone after a factory reset. If the data lived only on the device and not in the cloud, the outcome depends on the model and encryption.
If you were about to format because the computer was slow, the right order is a backup first — not recovery afterwards. The guide to formatting without losing files explains the sequence. If the format already happened, we deal with now.
What to do immediately — and what to avoid
The right move is one: stop using the media. Shut down the computer or unplug the USB. Do not save new files, do not reinstall Windows on the same drive, and do not download "recovery programs" onto the unit where the data was lost.
Also avoid:
- Repeated restarts when the drive clicks or disconnects.
- Drive repair (chkdsk, "repair this drive") without a diagnosis — it can change the structure before the files are saved.
- Opening a hard drive at home.
- Apps that promise "100% recovery" without explaining the method.
If you already installed something on the same drive, do not panic and do not keep going. Bring the device as it is. Every extra write lowers the chances.
How we help with recovery in Ioannina
The process starts with a check, not a promise. We see whether the media is recognised, whether the fault is logical (format, deletion, a damaged file system) or physical, and which method makes sense. We tell you what can realistically be saved and what it costs before we proceed.
On a simple deletion or a quick format of a healthy drive, the work is often targeted: photos, documents, work folders. On a drive with mechanical wear the priority is a safe copy of whatever still reads, not making the same media "open again".
We tie recovery to repair when needed. If the laptop needs a new SSD after the files are rescued, we discuss that separately — on laptop repair or PC repair. We do not mix format and recovery without you knowing what happens at each step.
When recovery is hard
Honesty before optimism. It gets harder when:
- The SSD has already "cleared" cells with TRIM after the format.
- A full format or a Windows install filled the drive.
- The drive has physical damage, a drop, or repeated clicking.
- The data is encrypted and the password or BitLocker key is missing.
Even then, a check is worth it. Sometimes part of the files can be saved — the most important documents, not the whole disk. Better to learn that from a diagnosis than to keep experimenting at home.
Frequently asked questions
I formatted a few hours ago. Is there still hope?
Often yes, especially after a quick format and if you did not reinstall the OS on the same drive. The less the media was used afterwards, the better.
The USB asks to be formatted. Should I click format?
No. That message usually means a file-system problem, not that the files are gone. Formatting at that point makes recovery harder.
Can I try a recovery program myself?
Only if you install it on another drive or computer and scan the problem media as external storage. Installing it on the same USB or the same C: writes over the lost files. If you are not sure, do not risk it.
Do you guarantee that every file will be found?
No. No responsible technician guarantees a result before diagnosis. We tell you what we see and proceed only with your approval.
How much does recovery cost?
Diagnosis is free. The cost depends on the media, the volume and whether there is physical damage. You hear it before the work starts.
Do not keep using the drive "until a solution turns up". Shut the device down and ask for a check. In Ioannina the first assessment is free.
