The computer restarts by itself

The computer restarts by itself

The computer restarts by itself while you are working: the screen goes dark, the fans may stay at full speed for a moment, and Windows comes back from the beginning. This is different from a machine that never starts. Here the PC or laptop has already turned on. At some point, on its own, it returns to the boot screen.

If it will not turn on at all, comes on for two seconds and dies, or stays on a black screen, the guide is a different one: the computer will not turn on. If the picture freezes and you have to hold the power button, see my computer freezes. This article stays with a restart you did not ask for.

What is actually happening

The moment of the restart says more than the fact that it “went down”:

  • In a game, a video or heavy work. The fans had already sped up. Often temperature, the power supply or the graphics card.
  • On the desktop, with no load. A document or the browser is open and it restarts. Here we look at memory, the drive and a Windows error that stays hidden.
  • A blue screen for an instant, then it boots again. Windows is set to restart as soon as an error appears. The code passes too quickly to read.
  • Only on a laptop, only on battery or only on mains. The battery and the laptop’s power adapter are different faults.
  • Since the day of an update. Windows or a graphics driver. We say so before we open the case.

What to write down

One sentence is enough, if it is specific:

  1. When. At startup, after a few minutes, only in a game, or also when idle.
  2. Which machine. Desktop or laptop. On a laptop, whether it happened on battery or on mains.
  3. Whether a blue screen appeared, even for a fraction of a second.
  4. What changed last. An update, a new card, a move, a clean, a drop.
  5. Smell, noise or beeps. Burning, a pop, repeating beeps.

Stop using it if it smells burnt, you heard a pop, or the drive is clicking. Do not keep “testing” it with game after game to see if it happens again, and do not format it because the restarts have become tiring. A format does not repair a power supply, memory or a heat problem. If the drive is failing, a format can make protecting the files harder.

The causes we see in the workshop

Overheating. Dust in the heatsinks, dried thermal paste, or a laptop on a blanket or pillow blocks the air. The machine works, heats up and restarts to protect itself. A dust clean is the right job when temperature is the cause. Switching the fan off so it “quietens down” makes it worse.

Power supply. A supply that cannot hold the load drops the computer the moment the graphics card asks for current. On the desktop, with no game running, it can look fine. Replacing the card or the supply blindly does not show which one failed. Both are measured.

RAM. After a move, a knock or a clean, a memory module that is poorly seated or has failed causes restarts at random moments, not only under load. The check is a test, not buying a second module “to see”.

A hidden blue screen. Windows can restart on its own as soon as a driver or a program crashes. You only see the logo coming back. In the shop we read the error log and say whether it is a driver, the drive or a part.

A driver or an update. When the restarts began the same day as a Windows or graphics-card update, the software is checked first. If they continue after a clean driver install, the hardware remains.

A drive that is starting to fail. Less common than heat and the power supply, but we see it: a restart together with folders that lag or files that will not open. A copy of whatever still opens comes first, before any reinstall. When a Windows install is worth it is a separate article: when a computer needs Windows installed.

A laptop battery. Restarts only off the mains, or a laptop that dies as soon as the cable is moved, point to the battery or the charging port. If the underside has swollen, stop using it and see swollen laptop battery.

What you can do at home

  • Keep the vents clear. A laptop needs a hard surface, not a bed or a pillow.
  • Unplug USB devices you do not need: an external drive, a hub, an old printer. A failed device can drop the system the moment it connects.
  • If the desktop was dropped or moved, do not open the power supply and do not move cables inside the case. A power supply holds voltage.
  • Keep open only what you must, and save often, until the diagnosis is done.

Until it is repaired

If the computer is for work and you need one the same day, laptop rental covers the gap. Diagnosis at the shop, Yoseef Eliya 18B, is free, and the price is given before any work starts. The general guide is PC repair in Ioannina.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a virus when the computer restarts by itself?

It can be, when the restarts come with strange programs, browser changes or files that appeared on their own. More often, in the workshop, the cause is temperature, the power supply or memory. Diagnosis separates them before any format.

Will a format stop it?

Only if the cause is the system or a bad driver. A power supply, overheating and failed memory continue after a reinstall. That is why a hardware check comes first when the restarts happen at idle or only under load.

Why only when I play a game?

A game raises temperature and power demand together. Cooling, the power supply and the graphics card are checked as a set. A card that “drops” only in a game may be the card itself or a supply that cannot feed it.

Do the restarts delete files?

A restart on its own does not wipe the drive. What was open and unsaved is at risk, and files are at risk if the drive is already failing. Save whatever still opens, and do not format before the check.

Do a laptop and a desktop have the same fault?

The symptom is the same. On a laptop, temperature, the battery and the power socket come first. On a desktop, the power supply, dust and the graphics card come first. The order of the check follows the machine.

How long does the check take?

The first check is done in the shop. If it needs a power-supply measurement, a memory test or a clean, we tell you the time and the cost before you approve the work.
