The computer will not turn on, and the first thought is that it has burned out. Often it has not. A desktop with no sign of life, a desktop whose fans spin but the screen stays black, and a desktop that starts for two seconds and dies are three different faults, with three different costs.
If the machine is a laptop, the guide is a different one: the laptop will not turn on. This article stays with the desktop, the case under or beside the desk. The general guide to when a technician is worth it is PC repair in Ioannina.
What “will not turn on” actually looks like
Before you bring the PC in, note exactly what happens. That one sentence saves time in diagnosis:
- No reaction at all. No light, no fan, the screen stays off.
- It sounds as if it is working, but there is no picture. Fans and the drive may start. The PC has power, and the problem is the monitor, the cable or the graphics card.
- Starts and dies at once. It comes on briefly and shuts down, with or without beeps.
- It reaches a message and stops. It asks for a disk, sticks on the logo or shows a blue screen. The machine has power. The problem is further along, in the drive or the system.
What you can check safely
- The wall socket and the power strip. Try another socket. A switched-off power strip looks like a dead computer.
- The power cable. Make sure it is seated at both ends: in the wall and at the back of the case. Try another cable of the same type if you have one.
- The switch on the power supply. Many desktops have an I/O switch at the back, next to the cable socket. If it is on O, the button on the front does nothing.
- The monitor. Turn the monitor on with its own button and check that the picture cable is in the port the computer actually uses. A monitor that is off is easy to read as “the computer will not turn on”.
Stop here if you smell burning, you heard a pop inside the case, or liquid was spilled. Do not open the power supply, do not blow it with a hairdryer and do not leave it plugged in “to see if it comes round”. A power supply holds voltage even when unplugged. Opening it is not a home check.
The causes we see in the workshop
Cable, socket or power-supply switch. This is the first check because it needs no part and because it explains many “dead” PCs that started as soon as the socket changed or the switch at the back was flipped.
Power supply. When the cable and the switch are fine and there is no power anywhere, the power supply is the first suspect. We do not replace it blindly: a new supply on a failed motherboard fixes nothing, and a weak supply can shut the PC down again after the repair.
Power button. The button on the front of the case connects to the motherboard with thin wires. If it has come loose or failed, the PC does not react even though the supply is good. We check that in the shop. Do not short the pins yourself.
RAM. After a move, a knock or a clean, a memory module that has come out of its slot gives a black screen or repeating beeps. It does not need a new computer. It needs to be seated properly, and a check in case the module itself has failed.
Graphics card or monitor. If the fans spin and there is no picture, another monitor and another cable are tried first. If the picture is missing on a second monitor too, the card or the motherboard remains. The decision comes after measurement, not from the symptom alone.
Drive. If the computer powers on but cannot find a system, the drive may not be answering. Protecting the files comes before any format.
Motherboard. When the power supply measures correctly, the memory is seated and there is still no start, the motherboard remains. We then say plainly whether the repair is worth it against a checked used PC, before you pay.
Liquid, smoke or a burning smell
If the computer failed after water, coffee or a soft drink, switch it off at the back, unplug the cable and do not put it in rice. Liquid under the parts does not leave that way, and corrosion continues over the following days. The sooner it is opened and cleaned, the better for the board and for the files.
A burning smell or smoke means it stays unplugged. Do not turn it on “once more” to see if it has passed.
Until it is repaired
If the computer is for work and you need it the same day, laptop rental covers the gap. Diagnosis at the shop, Yoseef Eliya 18B, is free, and the price is given before any work starts.
Frequently asked questions
If no light comes on, is it definitely the power supply?
No. The socket, the cable, the switch at the back and the power button are checked first. The power supply remains as a cause after those are ruled out.
Can I leave it plugged in overnight in case it starts?
No, when it shows no sign of life, smells of burning or has had liquid on it. Continuous voltage on a failed circuit can make the damage worse.
Are the files lost if it will not turn on?
Not by itself. The files are on the drive. They are at risk if the drive has failed or if a format is done before the check. We say so in the diagnosis, before any work.
Is repair worth it on a computer that is many years old?
It depends on the cause. A cable, a button or a memory module reseated often pays off. An expensive motherboard in a very old machine may not. The comparison is made with numbers, after diagnosis.
How long does the check take?
The first power check is done in the shop. If it needs opening or a part, we tell you the time before you approve the work.
