A laptop or a desktop that takes minutes to open Windows and stalls on every program is not always ready for the bin. On most of those machines the brake is the old mechanical hard drive. Replace it with an SSD, add RAM where memory is short, and clear whatever else is holding the system back, and everyday speed can rise by up to 10X. That is the 10X upgrade we do on laptops and desktop PCs in Ioannina.
The “up to” matters. Not every task becomes 10X faster, and a computer that already has an SSD will not get that jump. Diagnosis is free, so we can tell you whether your machine is one of those cases before you pay for anything.
Where the 10X comes from
A mechanical hard drive (HDD) finds data with a moving head. Windows, the browser and Office do not ask for one large file. They ask for thousands of small ones, constantly. That is where an HDD falls behind: the disk often sits at 100% while you are simply opening a program.
An SSD has no moving parts and answers those small requests much faster. In practice, opening Windows, the browser, email and folders can drop from a minute of waiting to a few seconds. That difference in everyday response is the up to 10X — not a magic multiplier on the processor.
Copying one large file rises by less, usually a few times, not 10X. And if the computer already has an SSD, a newer drive will not give you another 10X. We say so at the check, before we order a part.
Laptop and desktop: the same idea
The cause is the same on both. The work is not.
On a desktop PC the drive is usually easy to change. The old HDD can often stay as a second disk for files, while Windows runs from the SSD. A RAM upgrade is just as common.
On a laptop we first check what the machine accepts: a 2.5-inch SATA drive or an M.2, and whether the slot is SATA or NVMe. Not every SSD fits every laptop. Drive types and capacity are covered in SSD upgrade for a laptop.
On both, the question before you buy is the same: is an upgrade worth it, or is a new machine the better spend? See when a computer needs an upgrade.
The three steps that produce the speed
Order matters. The wrong order spends money without the 10X.
- An SSD in place of the HDD. This is the step with the largest difference. Without it, the rest is a breather, not 10X.
- RAM, when memory is short. With 4 GB the computer constantly writes to the disk to “borrow” memory. If that disk is an HDD, you feel the borrowing as freezing. 8 GB covers internet, Office and video calls comfortably. 16 GB helps when you keep a lot open at once. If memory is already enough, more RAM will not deliver 10X.
- Cleaning where the real cause is. Dust and dried thermal paste make the processor slow itself down so it does not overheat — the computer gets sluggish after a few minutes, with the fan at full speed. That is fixed by cleaning, not by another drive. Heavy Windows, junk programs at startup or malware need a software clean-up or a clean install. A format on its own, still on an old HDD, is not 10X.
The combination that changes day-to-day use is an SSD, enough RAM, and a system that is not overheating or dragging junk. Not everyone needs all three. Diagnosis says which one is missing.
What you can check before you bring it in
Without opening the case:
- In Task Manager the disk stays at 100% while you are not copying anything large. That almost always means a mechanical drive, or a drive that is choking.
- The properties of drive C: show an HDD, or the computer is older than about 2016 and has never been upgraded.
- RAM is 4 GB and it freezes as soon as you open a browser and a second program — the same pattern as my computer keeps freezing.
- After ten minutes of work the speed drops and the fan screams. There we look at temperature first, not a new processor.
Do not install “PC booster” or “optimizer” programs. They do not deliver 10X, and they often add the very load they claim to remove.
When it will not be 10X
It is worth hearing this before you pay:
- The computer already has an SSD and 8 GB of RAM or more, and it still cannot handle video editing or new games. The limit there is the processor or the graphics card, not the drive.
- You want 10X the frame rate in a game. An SSD shortens loading. Frames are set by the graphics card, the processor and RAM.
- On many MacBooks the drive is soldered to the board. The same HDD-to-SSD path does not exist. On a Mac we say so at diagnosis. We do not sell an upgrade the machine cannot take.
- The board, the screen or the power supply needs a repair that costs as much as a newer computer. Then the honest answer is replacement, not 10X.
How we do it in Ioannina
At the workshop, Yossef Eliya 18B, the order is fixed:
- A free check: what drive it has, how much RAM, whether it overheats, whether the software is the problem.
- We tell you whether 10X applies to your use, or whether the gain will be smaller.
- We give the cost before the work — drive, memory and labour separately — and we start only with your approval.
- We move the system across or do a clean install, after agreeing what must be kept. We test it before you take it back.
We do not start a drive change without discussing a copy of your files. If the old disk is already failing, recovery comes first.
Frequently asked questions
Does 10X apply to every computer?
Not to every task, and not to every machine. It applies as up to 10X the everyday response when the brake is a mechanical drive. If you already have an SSD, the gain is smaller, and we say so before you pay.
Does it work on a laptop and a desktop?
Yes. The idea is the same. On a laptop we first check what drive and what memory the model accepts.
Is a format enough to make it 10X faster?
No, if the old mechanical drive stays in place. A format cleans the software. The large difference comes from the SSD.
Will I lose my files?
No, when the system is moved across or backed up before the work. We agree what must be kept before we start.
Will games run faster?
Levels and programs will load faster. Frames per second do not become 10X from an SSD.
