Laptop will not turn on: what to check before repair

The laptop will not turn on, and the first thought is a dead motherboard. Often it is not. A laptop with no sign of life, a laptop whose lights come on but the screen stays black, and a laptop that starts for two seconds and dies are three different faults, with three different costs.

The general guide to when a technician is worth it is laptop repair in Ioannina. This article stays on the single symptom “it will not turn on”, so you know what you can look at yourself and what is better left alone.

What “will not turn on” actually looks like

Before you bring the machine in, note exactly what happens. That one sentence saves time in diagnosis:

  • No reaction at all. No light, no fan, the screen stays off.
  • Lights on, no picture. The fan may be spinning. That is a different problem: see laptop black screen.
  • Starts and dies at once. It comes on briefly and shuts down, with or without beeps.
  • It reaches a message and stops. It asks for a disk, sticks on the logo or shows a blue screen. The laptop has power. The problem is further along, in the drive or the system.

What you can check safely

  1. The wall socket and the power strip. Try another socket. A switched-off power strip looks like a dead laptop.
  2. The charger. If it has its own light, see whether it comes on in the wall and when it is plugged into the laptop. A cable bent near the plug is a common cause.
  3. The socket on the laptop. If it only charges when you hold the cable at a certain angle, do not force it. The port wears, and on some models so does the board behind it.
  4. The battery, if it comes out. On older laptops with an external battery, remove it, connect only the charger and press power. If it then starts, the battery is the first suspect.

Stop here if you smell burning, the case has lifted or is hot while idle, or liquid was spilled. Do not open it, do not blow it with a hairdryer and do not leave it plugged in “to see if it comes round”.

The causes we see in the workshop

Charger or power socket. The charger is not delivering the right voltage, or the socket inside the laptop has come loose. Replacing the charger without measuring it often fixes nothing: the new charger is plugged into a broken port.

Battery. A worn-out battery does not always stop the laptop starting when the charger is connected. A swollen battery can. If the cover is lifting, the trackpad sits proud or the machine will not lie flat, unplug the charger and do not press on it.

RAM. A memory module that has come out of its slot, after a drop or after the laptop was opened, gives a black screen or repeating beeps. It does not need a new laptop. It needs to be seated properly, and a check in case the module itself has failed.

Drive. If the laptop powers on but cannot find a system, the drive may not be answering. Protecting the files comes before any format.

Motherboard. When there is no power anywhere, the charger measures correctly and the battery is ruled out, the board is what remains. We then say plainly whether the repair makes sense against a checked refurbished laptop, before you pay.

Liquid, a drop, or a smell

If the laptop stopped starting after coffee, water or a soft drink, turn it off, remove the charger and do not put it in rice. Rice does not pull liquid out from under the chips, and corrosion continues over the following days. The sooner it is opened and cleaned, the better for the board and for the files.

After a drop, a laptop that will not start may only have shifted memory or a torn display cable. That is why diagnosis comes before the decision “it needs a board”.

Until it is repaired

If this is a work or university laptop and you need a machine the same day, laptop rental covers the gap. Diagnosis at the shop, Yossef Eliya 18B, is free, and the price is given before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

If no light comes on, is it definitely the motherboard?

No. The charger, the port and the battery are checked first. The board remains the cause only after those have been measured.

Can I leave it plugged in overnight in case it starts?

Not when it shows no sign of life, smells, or has had liquid in it. Constant voltage on a damaged circuit can make the damage worse.

Are the files lost if it will not turn on?

Not by themselves. The files are on the drive. They are at risk if the drive has failed, or if a format is done before the check. We say so at diagnosis, before any work.

Is repair worth it on a laptop that is many years old?

It depends on the cause. A new port, charger or battery is often worth it. An expensive board repair on a very old machine may not be. The comparison is made with numbers, after diagnosis.

How long does the check take?

The first power check is done at the shop. If it needs opening or a part, we tell you the time before you approve the work.
