Laptop black screen: causes and what to do

A black screen on a laptop is not the same as a laptop that has no power. If the fan is spinning, the keyboard lights up or you hear the startup sound, the machine is alive. What is missing is the picture. Sometimes it is a brightness setting, sometimes the display cable, sometimes the panel itself or the graphics chip.

If nothing comes on, no light and no fan, start with laptop will not turn on. If the screen shows a picture but the system freezes, that is a different subject: the computer keeps freezing. This article stays with the case where the screen stays black.

Three pictures, three different faults

  • Black from the first moment, with the fan running. The laptop starts and produces no image.
  • The logo appears, then it goes black. It passes the first stage and loses the picture at Windows or at the logo.
  • The screen comes on briefly and goes dark, or you can only see it with a torch. Often the backlight has failed, while the panel is still “showing” an image.

Note which of the three you see. It changes the repair.

What to try before you bring it in

  1. Brightness. Press the brightness-up key, usually together with Fn. A screen at zero looks broken.
  2. An external monitor or a TV. Connect HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA, whichever the laptop has, and press the display-switch key (often a screen icon on F4, F5 or F8). If the external screen shows a picture, the laptop works and the fault is in its own panel, cable or hinge.
  3. The lid. Open and close the lid slowly. If the picture flickers at one angle, the cable that runs through the hinge is breaking as the lid moves.
  4. Waking from sleep. If it only goes black when you wake it, and it comes back after you hold the power button, software or the display driver is the likely cause, not a broken panel.

Do not take the lid apart yourself. Display ribbon cables tear easily, and a screen that could have been repaired becomes a screen that needs replacement.

What we find when an external screen does not settle it

Display cable. It wears at the hinge, after years of opening and closing or after a drop. The picture cuts out, shows lines, or comes back when you hold the lid at one angle. The cable is replaced, not always the whole panel.

The panel. A drop, pressure inside a bag, or an object closed onto the screen leaves a black surface, lines or blotches. If an external screen looks normal, replacing the panel brings the laptop back.

Backlight. The image is there but it is not lit. With a torch at an angle you can make out the icons. This does not need a format.

Graphics chip or motherboard. When an external screen also shows nothing, while the laptop powers on, the fault is behind the panel: memory, a drive that will not let the system start, or the graphics chip on the board. On many laptops that chip is soldered. We then tell you whether a repair or another machine makes more sense, before a larger job is opened.

Overheating can kill the picture while you are working. If the laptop burns hot at the side and shuts down during a video call or a game, the path is a clean, not a new screen.

After a drop or liquid

A drop can tear the cable or crack the panel without cracking the outer glass. Liquid on the screen or the keyboard means turning it off at once and unplugging the charger. Do not charge it to “see if it lights up”.

If the laptop starts on an external screen, your files are reachable. Take a copy before any replacement, to be safe. The general guide to when repair is worth it is laptop repair in Ioannina.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black screen mean the laptop has burned out?

No. If the fan spins or the lights come on, the laptop has power. The picture can be missing because of brightness, the cable, the panel or the graphics chip.

If the TV shows a picture, are the files safe?

Yes, in that case the system is starting and the files are there. The fault is in the laptop’s own screen or its cable.

I can only see the picture with a torch. What is wrong?

Usually the backlight, not Windows. Diagnosis confirms it before we replace a panel.

The screen went black after a Windows upgrade. Does it need a new screen?

Usually not. If the picture was normal before the upgrade, we check startup and the display driver first. A new screen is suggested only when the external-screen test justifies it.

Does a screen replacement wipe anything?

Replacing the screen does not erase the drive. If the laptop shows no picture anywhere, we first check whether the drive can still be read.
