PS5 Cleaning — When Deep Cooling Service Is Actually Needed

If your PS5 runs too hot, the fan sounds like a jet, or you see Your PS5 is too hot, that is rarely “normal game heat.” It usually needs PS5 cleaning: an internal clean of the cooling system and proper service of the contact between the APU and the heatsink. Blowing air at the outer cover is not enough.

Dust collects on the grilles, the fan, and the heatsink without showing from the outside. The console can look tidy in the living room while the airflow path is almost blocked inside. Keep playing like that and the system throttles, ramps the fan, and sometimes shuts off with no warning at all. For the symptom list, see why the PS5 overheats.

When a PS5 needs cleaning

Cleaning is not cosmetic. It is cooling maintenance. Get it checked when you notice one or more of the following:

  • A temperature warning, or a sudden shutdown a few minutes after a game loads.
  • A very loud fan even on the home screen.
  • Little or no hot air coming out the back, while the console feels burning inside.
  • Stuttering, FPS drops, or unexpected errors mid-game.
  • Daily long sessions, pets in the house, the console near the floor, or inside a closed cabinet.

As prevention, internal service makes sense about every 1–2 years, depending on the room. Pet hair and dust shorten that interval. Do not wait until it “looks dirty” on the outside — the heatsink clogs from the inside.

What a proper deep clean includes

A professional PS5 cleaning is not a blast of canned air under the top panel. The console is disassembled so the heatsink, fan, ducts, ports, and lint traps can actually be cleaned.

Then the thermal interface on the APU is checked. The PS5 uses liquid metal, not the ordinary thermal paste found in most PCs. If the factory material has dried, darkened, or migrated, the heatsink no longer takes heat properly. That needs cleaning and a fresh application of the right material, in the right amount. Memory chips and power circuits are checked too, if the factory silicone pads have degraded.

The fan is cleaned and, where needed, lubricated. Afterwards temperatures and noise are checked so you can see whether cooling is working as it should.

Saved games and progress are not erased by a cleaning. It is not a format and it does not wipe the internal SSD.

Why opening it yourself is a bad bet

We often see consoles after a home attempt: broken plastic clips, unseated fan or power connectors, torn ribbon cables, too much paste, or a damaged fan blade. Repair then costs more than a proper service in the first place.

Liquid metal is electrically conductive. If it spills on the motherboard and is not fully cleaned, it can short the board on the first power-on. It is not the same as regular paste and must not be replaced with cheap PC paste. Thermal performance drops sharply and the APU — which is not practically replaceable — is at risk.

Reusing old liquid metal that has already burned or contaminated is also a poor idea. The surface needs a proper clean and a new application. That work needs a stable bench, the right tools, and experience with this specific console.

Horizontal vs vertical — and what the rear air means

On many PS5 units, leaving the console standing upright all the time can let liquid metal pool toward one side of the chip. Horizontal placement often keeps contact more even. It is not a magic fix by itself: if the heatsink is clogged, orientation will not save it.

A practical check: during a game, hot air should come out the back. That means the heatsink pulled heat and the fan is dumping it. If the exhaust is lukewarm or almost cold while the chassis burns, heatsink-to-APU contact or airflow through the fins is wrong.

Leave space around the vents, do not shut it in a cabinet, and do not sit it on carpet. Placement matters, as we also cover in PlayStation repair in Ioannina.

What cleaning is not

A deep clean targets function: temperature, noise, airflow. It is not a factory rebuild or a polish of every scratch on the plastics. Tiny traces of dust in unreachable spots that do not affect cooling may remain. Worn paint, peeling, or marks that will not lift are not fixed by cleaning — those need replacement covers, after you are told the extra cost.

If cooling is healthy after the service but the console still shuts down, shows image artifacts, or throws errors, the cause may be the PSU, HDMI, or the board. Cleaning rules out overheating as the cause; it does not repair every fault on its own. At ZarrasTech diagnosis is free and any extra work starts only with your approval.

Indicatively, a full cleaning service with fan lubrication and renewed thermal material is usually in the €45–75 range, depending on generation and what is found. If a new fan or another repair is needed, you are told before any parts are ordered.

FAQ

Can I clean a PS5 at home with compressed air?

On the outside, with the console off and unplugged, you can wipe surface dust with a soft cloth. Strong air or a vacuum on internal parts pushes dust deeper and can strain the fan. Do not open the console unless you understand the liquid-metal procedure.

Will cleaning delete my games?

No. Internal cleaning and cooling service do not wipe games, saves, or your account.

How often does a PS5 need cleaning?

Usually every 1–2 years. Sooner if you have pets, long gaming sessions, or already have noise and temperature warnings.

My PS5 shut off with no overheating message. Is it dust?

It can be. Some consoles power off from heat without a clear alert. That is why cooling is checked before assuming a board fault. Diagnosis shows what is true for your unit.

If your PS5 runs hot, sounds loud, or has not been serviced in a long time, do not wait for it to die mid-match. In Ioannina the check starts at no charge. See PlayStation repair or call +30 697 448 4324 for a free diagnosis.
